Easy Resolutions You Can Keep All Year To Optimize Your Health

The new year signifies new beginnings and a fresh start for making better choices to optimize your health. New Year’s resolutions are a great way to analyze your current health status and set personal goals that you would like to accomplish to better yourself. Many people set health and wellness related goals such as losing weight, following a healthier diet, starting an exercise routine, and going to therapy to improve mental health.

People often go overboard and set unrealistic goals which are unsustainable, leading most people to drop their resolutions within a short period of time and discontinue their attempts thereafter. Therefore, it is important to create resolutions that are realistic and can be maintained throughout the year to make significant improvements in health outcomes and quality of life.

Here are several New Year’s resolutions that are maintainable and will greatly improve your health and well-being.

  • Eat Less Processed Foods

    • Processed foods include any food item that has been canned, cooked, frozen, pasteurized, or packaged. Highly processed foods can be loaded with salt, sugar, additives, and preservatives, which are harmful to your health.

  • Eat More Whole Foods

    • Whole foods include vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and fish which are loaded with nutrients that your body needs to function at a high level.

  • Drink More Water

    • Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration which has negative health effects on the body. Increasing water intake can have many benefits on a wide variety of health outcomes including cognitive functioning, physical output, kidney performance, digestion, and complexion.

  • Reduce Sweetened Beverage Intake

    • Drinks that contain high sugar are linked to poor health outcomes such as an increased risk of weight gain/obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney diseases, non-alcoholic liver disease, tooth decay and cavities, and gout.

  • Get Better Quality Sleep

    • Sleep is critical contributor to overall health status. A total of 1/3 people do not get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation is linked to many serious conditions including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and depression. Reducing screen time, caffeine, and light pollution close to bedtime in addition to going to bed at a reasonable hour are easy ways to improve sleep.

  • Get Moving Daily

    • Getting up and getting your body moving, whether in a workout class or a brief walk outside, is going to benefit your body. Physical exercise helps to deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and improves your cardiovascular system.

  • Set A Realistic Exercise Routine

    • Making exercise a priority and a habit will help you achieve your health goals. Setting a goal to workout at least 3x per week at a specific time or to do a specific activity will help you solidify a routine that you can stick with for the whole year. Being consistent is key!

  • Practice Self Care

  • Mental health is a key contributor to our perception of ourselves and impacts how we think, feel, and behave. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Making time to check in with yourself and to allow yourself the time and space to relax will benefit your mental well-being. Many times, people become too busy to check in and allow themselves to be still.

  • Reduce Your Screen Time

  • Phones, computers and tablets are constantly at our fingertips and necessary for many aspects of life. Many people are dependent on their smart devices for work, school and social entertainment. Excessive time spent on devices can have negative health outcomes including visual dysfunction, headaches and mental health challenges. In particular, time spent on social media platforms are linked to depression, anxiety, and loneliness in some studies. Setting a New Year’s resolution to reduce screen time may help improve mood productivity.
  • Schedule a Periodic Health Check Up

  • It is important to schedule yearly check ups with your primary healthcare provider or as directed by your physicians to ensure you stay as healthy as possible and to stay on top of any existing health conditions. There are a number of vendors offering at-home specimen collection services for labs, to choose option for home convenience. Regular screening and health assessments are critical for catching any problems early therefore giving you the best chance to correct and improve your health.
